Open dialogue with stakeholders

“In addition, we wish to enter into an open dialogue with all stakeholders.”

fAMily day

On 30 June, we held our very first ArcelorMittal Belgium “Family Day” in the amusement park Walibi (Wavre). More than 10,000 people registered for the event. It became a sun-filled day with numerous fun rides and activities, and a performance by the Belgian singer Axelle Red.

E-Card competition

As usual, the ArcelorMittal group organised its annual drawing competition for all children of ArcelorMittal employees aged between 6 and 14. The theme in 2018 was ‘the beauty of steel’ or ‘the green nature of steel’. Arnaud Hardy, the 7-year son of an employee of Industeel, was the Belgian winner of the annual e-card competition. The drawings of the country winners were used as New Year’s greetings card.

Hackathon

On 22 and 23 September, ArcelorMittal Belgium organised its second hackathon, this time in Brussels. The topic was digital technology & industry 4.0 in support of safety. During ‘The Challenge’ more than 30 participants were given 36 hours to develop the digital safety assistant of the future.

Job day

On 13 October, we held our first Job day at ArcelorMittal Gent. 80 participants were given an opportunity to look behind the scenes of our site by boat, bus and helicopter.

Thesis fair

On 26 March, over 40 students in (industrial) engineering took part in the second thesis fair of ArcelorMittal in Ghent.

Visit local residents

On Saturday 6 October, we welcomed local residents on a company visit following an environmental incident that occurred earlier that year, in the month of May. Local residents of Sint-Kruis-Winkel and Mendonk incurred damage following dust deposition. Open communication with our residential neighbours on our environmental work and the related challenges we face is very important to us. During this environmental visit, special attention was paid to our dust control measures, which take top priority in our environmental policy.

Green number

Local residents who wish to report environmental issues can contact us directly or call the green number of the Ghent canal zone (0800/92.999) or the number for Liège (0479/79.35.64). We carry out a separate investigation into each report of pollution that we receive. Based on the information provided, we examine whether the pollution was caused by faults in our processes. If so, we make every effort to reduce the nuisance to a minimum. However, even if it turns out that we were not the cause of the environmental pollution, we will give an appropriate answer to the person who submitted the report.

Company visits

In 2018, we organised 197 company visits. Most of these were targeted at our customers and educational establishments, but specialised environmental visits are also organised on a regular basis.

Light Festival of Ghent

From 31 January to 4 February, the fourth Light Festival of Ghent was held. ArcelorMittal Belgium sponsored one of the 37 light art works.

Open Company Day

On Sunday 7 October 2018, we took part for the 20th time in the Open Company Day. The 2,250 visitors received a guided tour through the hot strip mill, the shipping hall and the production line for laser-welded blanks. We highlighted the importance of steel in our day-to-day life and our company’s innovative capacity. During each year’s open-door weekend, we also collect money for a charitable purpose. In 2018, we supported “De Triangel”, a local initiative, which supports people with a mental disability and a physical impairment. We are currently looking into the possibility of organising our first open company day in Liège in 2019.

Information meetings

In 2018, individual briefings were arranged with journalists and local, Flemish, Walloon, Belgian and European politicians to provide them in a pro-active manner with information about our company and about the commercial environment in which we are operating.
